Milton Glaser, born on June 26, 1929 is a graphic
designer from New York City. Milton Glaser is known for his incredible work including: the I “HEART” NY logo, the
psychedelic Bob Dylan poster and the Brooklyn Brewery logo.
The logo that is seen all
around New York was created based off of a need in the city. In the mid 1970’s,
the crime rate for New York was sky high and the city had become a dangerous
place in the eyes of the people. Milton Glaser was one of the men asked to
design a logo that would increase tourism in the town. Glaser was the one who
delivered the logo which was designed in the back of a taxi can and inspired by
Robert Indiana’s LOVE design.
He is also responsible
for helping develop Push Pin and directed it for twenty years. Push Pin Studios
was a set that sent out monthly graphics that "redefined and expanded the
imprimatur of the designer, illustrator and visual culture at large."
Glaser was also co-founder of New York Magazine and established Milton Glaser
Inc, in 1974. As a journalist for the New York Magazine, Glaser reinvented the
wheel. His main idea was to let the community know, what was happening in New
York. One of his major hits was “The Underground Gourmet,” which shed light on
cheap restaurants in New York. Glaser’s ideas and thoughts helped make the New
York Magazine a well-respected and model for others magazines to come.
His time as a designer introduced
more 300 posters into the world that were commonly displayed at Cooper Hewitt
National Design Museum, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and
the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
Milton Glaser won a
National Design Award Lifetime Achievement from the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum
in 2004 for his thoughtful and inspirational long term contributions to the
world of design. He also received the National Medal of Arts in 2009 by former
President Barack Obama and Mrs. Michelle Obama at the White House. The award
was managed by the National Endowment for the Arts and presented to only to recipients
a year. The award was consciously given to those who represented the “breadth
and depth,” of the arts. Glaser was the first graphic designer to ever receive
this award.
