Victoria, perhaps the #1 mistake is to skew or squash an image to fit a space rather than crop it to fit... To skew an image is to sing terribly out of tune...
The design of the spine is missing and as a result the text on the back of the book is too wide. The main way to have success with this project is to look at a real block and do your best to it stylistically even though you're doing a redesign.
